1867-68 Washington National B.B.C. Journal, Transcript & Fight Song
Personal Journal of William Dickson Recounting the 1867 Nationals of Washington's Western Tour- On July 11, 1867 the Washington Nationals embarked on the first extended tour in the history of American baseball. Along with the ballclub, an entourage of sportswriters headed by Henry Chadwick accompanied them. Among them was William Dickson. Included in his detailed account, written at some date well after the tour, are scores of the games, team lineups, information about some of the players' later careers, and even the team fight song (a newspaper clipping of all the words is included). Dickson writes in his journal: "In July 67, the Nationals made their grand Western Tour- the entire party numbered 30 and the press throughout the country spoke of it..." This fascinating account is comprised of ten sheets written in Dickson's hand on Treasury Department stationery, which were later retyped verbatim on five additional pages. It is certain these were transcribed sometime after the tour, perhaps in the latter part of the 19th century. Still, this is a first hand account of the inaugural baseball tour remembered by someone who witnessed it. Some of the pages exhibit edge chipping or slight tears, very good condition overall.
