1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Letter

1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Letter

This amazing letter dates to the first professional baseball team in history, the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. Included is a four-page letter and envelope - in immaculate penmanship - from Frank in Cincinnati, OH, to Miss Florence Moody in Williamsport, MD, forwarded to Waynesboro, PA. Of note is the passage, "this week is rather livelier than usual on account of the Cincinnati Ball Nine playing here. They have what they call Ladies Day twice a week, which has succeeded in bringing out quite a number of nice people. I wish you were here to see some of the games..." Also included are church people, camp meetings, and more. The Red Stockings were known for their Ladies Days, which dates this letter, and it is the first we have seen with 1869 Reds content.
