1880s Spalding Bat w/Earliest Known Use of the Term Memorabilia (Samuel M. Chase Collection)

1880s Spalding Bat w/Earliest Known Use of the Term Memorabilia (Samuel M. Chase Collection)

This bat bears a paper label using the term "memorabilia," the earliest known use of the term we have seen. This 35" Spalding Ring Bat was originally used by S.M. Chase. The Spalding trademark and sought after rings are bright and vibrant with minimal loss. Although the handle is cracked, it is still presents well and has great provenance. The handwritten label, just above the uppermost ring tells the story behind this wonderful bat. There is some paper loss but it appears to read, "To be kept MEMORABILIA...Bat with which SMC made a _____ base hit when the bases were all full and two _____ bringing all three home...______ between Yale _____ College _____...Score ____ 13 in f_____ of the ____." Further research and inspection may "fill in the blanks." Recently discovered collection of bats used by Samuel M. Chase, member of the Yale University Class of 1883. Three of his bats bear paper labels with the word "memorabilia," the earliest known use of the term we have seen.
