1883 L.C. Dole Bat Used by Samuel M. Chase for Yale
Wonderful 36.5" bat originally used by S.M. Chase, a young Connecticut ballplayer who played for Yale. This very interesting L.C. Dole & Co. bat was manufactured in New Haven Connecticut, has great stenciling, shows signs of game use and has many handwritten notations. In the center of the bat there is a paper label with the initials "S.M.C" and "Yale, '83, S." handwritten in pencil. Other hand written inscriptions read, "First Bw. '83 Champions," "Champions" and a hand made "Spalding" label in pencil towards the end of the bat, perhaps as he wished it were the more expensive national brand he preferred. Also, lengthwise down the bat, "S.M. Chase" is handwritten in ink and shows some bleeding into the wood. This bat is completely original in great unrestored condition and a great relic of early baseball. Recently discovered collection of bats used by Samuel M. Chase, a young Connecticut ballplayer and member of the Yale University Class of 1883. Two of his bats bear paper labels with the word "memorabilia," the earliest known use of the term we have seen.
