1887 "4 Strikes, 5 Balls" Umpire‚s Indicator

1887 "4 Strikes, 5 Balls" Umpire‚s Indicator

The last time Major League Baseball required five balls for a walk and four strikes for a strikeout was 1887, and that is precisely when this Spalding ball-strike indicator was used. Comprised of celluloid, the device is missing one screw but otherwise is in Very Good condition. The year before - 1886 - it actually took SEVEN balls to warrant a free pass and FIVE strikes to whiff, making this a one-of-a-kind item.
