1897 Kid Nichols Individual Portrait & 1897 Boston Beaneaters Chickering Matching Cabinets (2)
Two splendid cabinet cards presented to the players and the team, these to their finest pitcher and future Hall of Famer. The first is an individual cabinet card featuring Nichols in his Beaneaters uni. Two cartouches in the field of vision, one with “C.A. Nichols” and the other interestingly, “Copyright F.G. Selee and F.O. Woodruff ’97.” Perfect contrast and image is NRMT-MT. Card has minor corner wear and just the surface on the bottom left is chipped. Small tape stain on versos and minor wear. Overall strong EX+. 6.5x2.25”. The second is a team cabinet of the league champion 1897 Boston Beaneaters (they lost the Temple Cup to the storied Baltimore Orioles). Written in the image at bottom, “Boston Base Ball Club 1897.” A powerhouse team here with Jimmy Collins, Hugh Duffy, Fred Tenney, Chick Stahl, Sliding Billy Hamilton, Bobby Lowe, Freddie Lake, and of course Charles Nichols. A rousing six Hall of Famers (huge)! Nice contrast, the image is NRMT. Card has a bottom right corner chip and is o/w EX with only minor corner wear. Small tape stain on verso o/w the back is pretty clean. 5x7”. Both cabinet mounts sport a silver leafed “Elmer Chickering" logo with Boston address. One of the finest baseball portraiture photographers of the day he ranks up there with B.J. Falk and Carl Horner.
