1898 Teddy Roosevelt Letter Written as Rough Rider in Cuba

1898 Teddy Roosevelt Letter Written as Rough Rider in Cuba

Extremely rare letter written by Teddy Roosevelt as a Colonel with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. He was only there for four months hence the rarity of this TR "rank." A month after his charge up San Juan Hill, this is on a 6.75x5.25" sheet and dated "August 7th '98." It reads, "Please let trooper Bell, 1st U.S.V. who has been operated on for hernia rejoin the regiment now about to embark. The Chaplain is the bearer of this. T. Roosevelt Col. Com. 2nd Cavalry Brigade." Likely regards their return to the United Sates and their six-week quarantine on Long Island. Original envelope is written "Letter Col Roosevelt" in his hand, so there are essentially two autographs here. Letter has some foxing and a couple of envelope folds as well as four tiny "Cuban" bug holes. Ink is strong and NRMT.
