1903 Chicago White Sox Imperial Cabinet by Carl Horner

1903 Chicago White Sox Imperial Cabinet by Carl Horner

One of the truly classic pieces of sports photography, this 1903 composite of the Chicago White Stockings was done by a legend in the field, Carl Horner. The turn of the century photographer is responsible for perhaps the most famous ballplayer portrait of all, the one of Honus Wagner that appears on the T206 tobacco card that routinely fetches seven figures at auction. Many of the images on this composite were in fact used for the classic tobacco card sets. Horner struck gold devoting his abilities to an emergent sport in America, and as the photographer honed his craft, the game rocketed to new levels of popularity, establishing a symbiotic relationship between the two. This offering is fresh to the market and in beautiful condition, considering the photo's deep, perfect contrast plus untouched condition. The mount was hand-painted in pastels and the piece was handmade by Horner in studio. There is a small crack in the photo beside Horner's signature and some foxing to the mount, but this is still an exceptional item and the only one we have ever seen!
