1909 Polo Grounds Game Action Original Glass Plate Negative

1909 Polo Grounds Game Action Original Glass Plate Negative

Game-in-progress scene at the Polo Grounds in 1909. The scene, taken from the perspective of an upper-row seat behind the third base dugout, pictures an unidentified player sliding into third base. Much of the infield is visible as is right field and the right-field bleachers. Although no year is listed, it can be conclusively dated to 1909 by one of the advertising signs on the right-field wall that reads "Herald Sq. Theatre. The Broken Idol." Research indicates that "The Broken Idol" opened at the Herald Sq. Theatre in New York on August 16, 1909 and closed one month later, on September 18th. The negative (7x5") displays a few small areas of emulsion loss along the perimeter and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
