1910s-1940s Evolution of the Football Helmet (9)

1910s-1940s Evolution of the Football Helmet (9)

Perhaps no other piece of equipment in professional sports has changed more dramatically over the past century than the football helmet. For purposes of style as well as safety, multiple modifications have been implemented through the decades. Represented here are some of the many styles worn from the teens to the forties, including the Spalding aviation-style helmet with covered ear holes that was used in the military. The name GREEN Appears on the interior lining. The Dog Ear helmet - so named due to its free-hanging ear pads - shows a bit of dryness. A S.R. & Co. along with a Stall and Dean show nice use and good display qualities for their '20s-'30s era. As the '30s gave way to the '40s, hard leather became the norm, and three such examples are included here. Additionally, there is a brown helmet with fiberboard top, as well as one of the first plastic helmets - a Blue, Frank Leahy model with a clear face mask. Overall, the pieces average EX condition.
