James J. Corbett Vaudeville Silk Topper with His Initials

James J. Corbett Vaudeville Silk Topper with His Initials

James J. Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan in 1892 to win the world heavyweight title in the first gloved championship fight in that category. Corbett loved boxing, but theater and vaudeville performing ranked just as high. Dating from before he won the championship all the way into the 1920's Corbett made numerous performances on stage and certainly used the fame the heavyweight title gave him to advance this interest. Offered here is a wonderful commemorative from Corbett's days as an actor, his silk top hat. This black silk hat with brown band and white silk interior was made by Dunlap & Company. Has his initials "J.C." inside the hat. Has a hole and considerable wear, but still intact. Comes with a Players Cigarette card picturing Corbett in hat and tails. Very little from either Corbett's boxing or theatrical career have survived.
