1911 World Series Umpiring Crew with Klem & Connolly Original Glass Plate Negative
Original glass plate negative capturing the umpiring crew prior to a 1911 World Series game at the Polo Grounds. Pictured here are Bill Klem, Thomas Connolly, Bill Dinneen, and Bill Brennan. The gentleman standing beside the umpires is the stadium announcer, who, prior to the use of a public address system, would use the large megaphone in his hands to inform the crowd of the lineups and any changes during the game. There are a few etched notations along the top border, only a few of which are still legible, including the names "Dineen" and "Klem." The image's World Series attribution is due to the the Philadelphia Athletics player pictured in the background. The Giants played the A's in both the 1911 and 1913 World Series, but this umpiring crew appeared only in the 1911 fall classic. The negative (7x5") displays areas of emulsion loss along the top border and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archives. (Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.)
