1913 New York Giants with McGraw, Mathewson & Thorpe Original Glass Plate Negative

1913 New York Giants with McGraw, Mathewson & Thorpe Original Glass Plate Negative

Original glass plate negative capturing the 1913 New York Giants posing together on the field at the Polo Grounds. Thirty-one team members are pictured here, including manager John McGraw (standing, center), Christy Mathewson (kneeling, fifth from the right), Jim Thorpe (standing, third from the right), and Rube Marquard, (standing first on the right). Although no year is listed, this is a well-known image and we have seen other photographic examples that were dated 1913. The Giants won the pennant for the third consecutive year in 1913, but once again lost the World Series, with the Philadelphia Athletics proving victorious in five games. 1913 also marked Jim Thorpe's first season in the Majors. Considered the greatest all-around athlete in the world at the time, Thorpe appeared in nineteen games, batting .143 with 1 home run and 2 RBI. The negative (7x5") displays small areas of emulsion loss along the base and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archives. (<em>Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.</em>)
