1933 Honus Wagner Photograph (PSA Type I)
Original Type I photograph capturing Honus Wagner as he gets ready for his first spring training as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1933. Wagner is pictured posing at the train station together with Pirates team president W. W. Benanger (to his left) and manager George Gibson. After his retirement in 1917, Wagner was involved in several failed business ventures and in order to help him financially, the Pirates offered him a job as a coach in 1933, which he eagerly accepted. It turned out to be a great deal for the Pirates, as Wagner was not only an outstanding mentor to the younger players but a wonderful ambassador for the club, adored by the fans and well-liked by the press. He remained a coach with the club for the next eighteen years until his health forced him to retire in 1951 at the age of seventy-seven. A Brown Brothers credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with the original paper news caption (taped to the photo), which is dated "2/22/33." The photo (8.5x6.5") displays a few light creases and a slightly trimmed top and right border. In Very Good condition overall. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
