1959 Washington Senators Letter to American League Owners Requesting Move to Twin Cities

This lot contains the original correspondence on the letterhead of the Washington Senators to the American League owners concerning the club's desire to transfer their franchise to Minnesota. Dated October 19, 1959, this five-page letter from the Washington Baseball Club's office of the comptroller provides details of the intended move and rebuts rumors swirling at the time about the franchise's intentions. Also included are newspaper clippings from 1958 and 1959 concerning the involvement of Congress in the matter and copies of letters from both Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and a delegation of Minnesota and Wisconsin members of the House of Representatives supporting the move. This is the only known original and provides an interesting look back in time for fans of both baseball and politics.
