1961 Roger Maris and Sal Durante 61st Home Run Photograph (PSA Type I)

1961 Roger Maris and Sal Durante 61st Home Run Photograph (PSA Type I)

Original Type I photograph picturing Roger Maris posing with Sal Durante, who caught Maris' historic 61st home-run ball on the final day of the 1961 season. The image captures the pair in the Yankees locker room after the game. Maris proudly holds the 61st home-run ball in his left hand, while he and Durante hold a Yankees jersey bearing the number "61." Durante's famous catch was also a lucrative one for him. Prior to the game, California restauranteur Sam Gordon offered to pay $5,000 for the record-breaking ball. Even so, Durante was willing to simply give the ball Maris, but Maris, who was aware of the offer, told him to keep it and make himself some real money. The gesture was returned in kind, because after Gordon paid Durante the $5,000 for the ball, Gordon presented it to Maris as a gift. A Brown Brothers credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with Maris' name written in pencil. The photo (8x10") remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
