Amazing Charles Darwin Handwritten "Origin of the Species" Letter with Important "Sheep Cloning" Content
Charles Darwin, an English naturalist, made a life study of his theory of the origin of species and its natural selection through favorable variations. His ground breaking work, "On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection", published in 1859, set forth the results of his work and had a tremendous impact on religious thought. Offered is a two-page letter (both sides of a single 5.25 x 8" sheet) penned entirely in Darwin's hand, in which he expands upon the ideas presented in "On the Origin of Species." In "Origin", Darwin first mentions the subject of sheep breeding, a subject which he subsequently studied in great detail. The offered letter, written in 1868, is an inquiry into the Merino breed of sheep. The interesting content of the piece reads in part, "....is there any difference in the period of development of the horns in the breeds in which they are common to both sexes & in those in which they are confined to the males? I am anxious for information on this head, as I believe such facts have an important bearing on an obscure point in inheritance." Darwin then signs the letter boldly at the close, "Charles Darwin". The piece is handsomely matted and framed to an overall size of 33 x 20" with an image of Darwin, a plaque featuring a textual account of the letter's content, and a second plaque bearing information about Darwin's life and career. The piece remains in overall NRMT condition with the ink and signature rating a full 10 out of 10 in strength. This is a remarkable letter, given the connection to the modern day controversy of using sheep for cloning, and frankly one of the finer Darwin letters to be offered publicly.
