Circa 1910 John McGraw and Hal Chase Photograph (PSA Type II)
Vintage photograph capturing Giants manager John McGraw, Highlanders player/manager Hal Chase, and Hall of Fame umpires Bill Klem and Thomas Connolly as they discuss the ground rules prior to a game at the Polo Grounds, circa 1910. The notation "Hal Chase & John McGraw" was etched into the side of the original negative and appears in white lettering on the developed print. A Brown Brothers credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with the handwritten names (in pencil) of McGraw and Chase. Chase was player/manager of the Highlanders in 1910 and 1911. Because the Giants and Highlanders never met in the World Series, this is obviously a preseason or postseason exhibition game between the two city rivals. Chase, who ended his career with the Giants, was considered one of the finest fielding first baseman of his era, but his reputation for “throwing” games ultimately led to his being forced out of the Majors following the 1919 season. The photo (7x5") displays a few small corner creases and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type II Authentic.
