Collection of 16 Catcher's Masks
This extensive collective of 16 vintage catchers' masks pretty much illustrates the evolution of this piece of equipment from the late-1880's through the 1950's and 1960's. Although the first mask style patented by Thayer is not included here, there are several wire basket cage masks and from there one can see the improvements made as time went on and the masks became easier to wear. The biggest issue, of course, was visibility, and there are several configurations of the wire represented here; each is designed to allow the catcher to see out of the mask better. Very interesting and educational collection, especially for the kids wearing the "Darth Vader"-style masks today.
