Important 1860s Confederate General Robert E. Lee on Traveller Ambrotype in Original Leather Case
Civil War buffs, feast your eyes on this one-of-a-kind period original showing Confederate General Robert E. Lee on Traveller, his famous horse. From a classic daguereotype, this is a period photo of a photograph; the original being priceless. Still and all, this is quite significant and was likely presented by Lee himself for friends or sold in a photographic studio in the mid-to-late 1860s. We have not seen or heard of another and have consulted with experts who attest to its scarcity. The image is regal and of excellent quality. It is housed in its original leather case measuring 3.75x3.25". An ambrotype is a positive photograph on glass and, like a print on paper, it is viewed by reflected light. Like the daguerreotype, which it replaced, each is a unique original. Lee's most famous horse during the Civil War was notable for its speed, strength and courage in combat, and Lee rode him in many battles. Curiously, Traveller died within a few months after Lee passed in 1870.
