Jack Johnson as an Ethiopian General in Aida Photograph (PSA Type I)

Jack Johnson as an Ethiopian General in Aida Photograph (PSA Type I)

Original Type I photograph of Jack Johnson in costume as an Ethiopian General for his role in the opera Aida. Johnson is pictured posing on stage with the title character during rehearsal. One of the most controversial and flamboyant sports figures of the early 20th century, Johnson loved being in the spotlight, as evidenced here. The production of Aida that Johnson appeared in took place on October 2, 1936, at the Hippodrome Theatre in New York. Although Johnson claimed to have a fine singing voice, the part of the general was non-speaking role. Three Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with a written caption and a remnant of the original paper news caption. The photo (9x7") displays a moderate horizontal crease and is in Very Good condition overall. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
