John Wayne Signed Typed Letter Regarding Native American Spitting in His Face

John Wayne Signed Typed Letter Regarding Native American Spitting in His Face

In this wonderfully grouchy February 1, 1978 letter written to a University of Washington official who apparently requested his participation in an event dealing with Native-American affairs, the Duke, who was then 71, complains about a recent incident at the premier of his movie "Cahill, U.S. Marshall" in Seattle with a member of the American Indian Movement. "If this has anything to do with AIM, I will not give my permission," he begins, recalling how the man "spit in my face" in front of the theater, adding, "Lucky for him, a policeman had hold of each of my arms." He also grouses about being quoted out of context and concludes, "I do not intend to allow it to happen again. Sincerely, John Wayne." Signature in black ink is a winner, NRMT all the way. 7 1/4 x 10 1/2" letter is on stationery reading "John Wayne" in block letters on top, above the typed-in Wilshire Boulevard Beverly Hills address, and is nearly pristine with 2 light fold marks. Spitting in the Duke's face? A sacrilege!
