Turn of the Century Negative Stereotype African-American Baseball Mascot Cabinet Photograph

Turn of the Century Negative Stereotype African-American Baseball Mascot Cabinet Photograph

Unthinkable by today's standards, this cabinet photo from the early 1900s actually captures a young African-American man posing as a mascot for a Wisconsin shoe company. The roughly 3x4" photo is the only one known and is a testament to the common beliefs at the time that blacks were somehow considered an inferior race. The young man's jersey reads "WEINBRENNER CO." and features a demeaning "M" for mascot on the sleeve. There is tiny paper loss at the bottom-right corner of the photo, which is otherwise in EX-MT condition. Comes with a postcard from the same firm on a later date. The famed shoe firm was established in 1892. An incredible, mind-numbing piece.
