1984 Silver Medal from the Games of the XXIII Olympiad

1984 Silver Medal from the Games of the XXIII Olympiad

Awarded to Kim Gallagher of the U.S. for placing second in the women’s 800m race. The 1984 Olympic Games involved a boycott of all member nations for the third consecutive time. The Soviet Union & 13 allied countries boycotted in a reaction to the U.S.’ boycott (Moscow – 1980). This resulted in one of the most lopsided Summer Games in 80 years. The U.S. won a record 83 gold medals. The rising star was Mary Lou Retton. This was also the first ever privately financed Games. It resulted in a $215 million profit! Front of silver medal is raised image of Roman goddess with “XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles 1984”. Back is winner raised onto shoulders of men. “Athletics 800 meters – Women” engraved onto edge. Silver is speckled in some spots.
