The Dr. Alvin Weiner Postcard Collection (2,300+)
Amazing collection of over 2,300 postcards assembled over a 50 year period. Purchased all over the world they are a cornucopia of military and social history through the eyes of Dr. Weiner. There is great stuff here, the list is never ending. The condition is overall excellent (the key stuff is all nice). Most importantly the collection is unpicked with all the good stuff intact and all are old. Includes: 1) Military: The meat and potatoes of the collection. Many rarities from the turn of the century to WWI, almost every conflict is covered: large group of Rafael Tuck military and some beautiful Gale and Polden’s including complete sets (over 450 pieces, most NRMT), early 1900s “Les Uniforms Du Ier Empire” sets and singles (beautiful artist signed postcards in exceptional condition, over 500 pieces), unusual Daily Mail Battle Pictures (6), over 70 circa 1910 “Armee Francaise” with desired Aeronautic set of 8 (original envelopes), tons of WWI, large collection of rare WWI real photo series of battleships like the Louisiana & Seattle (includes dirigibles, “Black Gang at Work”), Russo-Japanese War. 2) Political & Military Satire and Propaganda: Possibly the most interesting area of the collection. Includes: General Pau real photos colorized by JK (French), “President Wilson the Man Who Saved Europe”, John Bull, good Kaiser satiricals including “teddy” bear, Pascual Orozco “1882-1915” sucking on the teat of liberty, super group of Spanish Civil War, Edward the Peacemaker, war rations, tons and tons of WWI, “German Ships Taken over by (U.S.) government (post Lusitania), 1919 Louis E. Woolf military satire (9), 1896 Prince Boris of Bulgaria, WWI French military “Erotic” by Xavier Sager (great). Our favorite is women on men’s minds series’. These are the classic images of men with trick imagery of their heads made of nude women. Includes a few Napoleon, Edward VII, Wagner, Bismarck, Leopold II, and Sarah Bernhardt. Total of 25 including group of skull heads (to show sin). 3) Good Postcards: There are many other categories and some great, great stuff. Ferris wheels and roller coasters, erotica, dogs, coronations (rarities), Tuck’s crying babies (6), King Insurance Co. group of 35 cards showing English rulers, 1900 Paris Exposition (27), 1906 Huld’s Puzzle series (16), 1906 set of 4 “Did This Ever Happen to You” by Waiter Wellman. 4) Miscellaneous: There are a lot of little treasures in here other than postcards such as WWII poster stamps (28), return of the century trade cards, nice group of British tobacco cards including a scarce Black Cats “War Cartoons” set from Canada (nearly 300 pieces). 5) Napoleon: There is of course some great Napoleon stuff here, at least a couple of hundred cards. Highlights include four rare and fantastic “puzzle” sets.
