Burris Jenkins Dempsey v Firpo Original Painting

Burris Jenkins Dempsey v Firpo Original Painting

This beautiful oil on heavy artist’s board was painted by the great Burris Jenkins, who was one of the most prolific sports and editorial cartoonists of the 20th century, second in sports perhaps to only Willard Mullin. This magnificent piece was the cover to the September 21, 1948 Marcel Cerdan vs. Tony Zale program. But it is actually Burris’ rendition of another classic bout. He (or an editor) has written at top, “Dempsey Firpo 1936 Polo Grounds” in blue crayon pencil. This could be easily removed (we are on the fence about whether that should happen). The quality is super fantastic. Jenkins' stunningly detailed crowd roars with a purposeful or unknowing homage to not only the pugilists in the ring, but to the master: George Bellows. Artist signed, 18x24”, there are a few pinholes from the stadium it hung in, otherwise it is EX-MT. It is definitely one of the finest boxing paintings you or I will ever see. Woof!
