Truman Letters Regarding Stevenson Election (6)
Consists of 6 pieces of correspondence all concerning Truman’s decision not to seek the re-election, attempting to get Adlai Stevenson to accept the Democratic nomination instead. Two signed while serving as President, on White House stationary with matching envelopes. The first dated March 11, 1952 regards a survey / interview w/ Adlai Stevenson; the second, dated April 3, 1952 pertains to Truman’s announcement at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, where he states clearly, “I would not be a candidate for re-election.” The long typed letters from Russ to President Truman and Adlai Stevenson shed light on the responses. Russ discusses his attempt to persuade Stevenson to accept the Democratic nomination. He writes Adlai to get him to reach the “right” decision. He discusses having a similar experience with Truman trying to avoid the Vice-Presidential nomination. The letter from Stevenson as Governor and reads “You (Russ) tempt me-or rather my conscience-but not quite enough! He signs just “Adlai”. The condition of the Truman letters’ themselves, overall are VG-EX and the signatures are EX-MT. Each letter measures 7x9” and the envelopes are 7.5x4.75”. The Adlai Stevenson letter is EX-MT and the signature (Adlai only) is NRMT. The two type unsigned letters from Russ are good and measure 9x11”.
