Stunning Harry S. Truman Presidential Letter Collection (25)
Great historical value, just overflowing with fabulous content within. Twenty-two letters on White House stationary with matching envelopes, all signed by Harry S. Truman as President, addressed to Russ Stewart. Three are signed simply, “Harry” with the rest containing full name signatures. Important reference made to an interview with General Walter Bedell Smith, Director of the CIA handpicked by Truman (founder of the CIA). Another, written in 1949 sheds light on an unfortunate situation with chairman, Leland Olds (1940-49) of the Federal Power Commission. Victim of a McCarthy-style lynching at the hands of Senator, Lyndon B. Johnson (represented oil & gas special interests). Read on as Truman defends Olds as well as his record. Additional content in a letter penned 1950 regards the State of National Emergency in China. Truman makes this bold acknowledgement: “Their metal condition is horrible brought about by themselves and their gullibility to lying politicians.” Further content in a letter penned day after his State of the Union address (Jan., 1952) contains the all important statement of his not seeking another term. Letter in 1947, discusses a memorial to his (Truman’s) Mother and the Marshall Field purchase of the Chicago Times. An outrageous collection with, at times, comical content. Almost all letters are clean, in beautiful condition with the original postmarked envelopes and related letters from Russ Stewart. One signatures with blot at center, all others grade EX to Mint with an average of NRMT. Three letters are penned on his personal stationary. The White House letters measure 7x9”, with envelopes being 7.5x4.75”. Others are 7.5x10.5” and NRMT.
